Banner Blindness - How To Discuss

Banner Blindness

Definition

The tendency of web visitors to ignore banner ads, even if the banners contain information that visitors are actively looking for.

Information

The term "banner blindness" was introduced to the web community by Jan Panero Benway and David M. Lane in the 1998 study "Banner blindness: Web browsers often miss obvious links."

It should be noted that blindness is just one of the obstacles a typical banner faces. Ad blocking software doesn't even allow you to actively skip display ads. Some people also navigate with the graphics turned off, while others just turn off the animations. Even if visitors can receive banners, slow ad servers often don't deliver banners in time to reach potential viewers.

Banner blindness is a common phenomenon where users ignore advertisements on websites.

Where does banner blindness come from?

As the popularity of the Internet has increased, advertisers are beginning to realize the power of online advertising. Initially, the banners were often painted in bright colours. Nowadays, internet users, who are used to seeing a lot of banners on the web, unconsciously know which elements of the sites contain advertisements (often irrelevant content) and therefore ignore them.

Why do users ignore online advertisements? Mainly because they are aware that they appear in certain areas of the web, that their content is uninformative or inappropriate for the target audience, or that their format is annoying.

How to prevent banner blindness?

Editor:

  • Choose the most effective place for banner advertising,
  • Choose classified ads related to the site.

advertisers:

  • interest recipients
  • use remarketing ads,
  • define the target audience
  • Create banners with the highest standards,
  • Use native ads tailored to the websites they appear on.
  • Use mobile responsive ads.

Despite the phenomenon of banner blindness, research shows that online advertising campaigns are effective. It has been proven that although we consciously ignore the banners, we unconsciously remember the brand.

Banner blindness refers to the idea that most people no longer notice display ads.

Whether they consciously don't look at them or unconsciously ignore them, most people simply don't notice most ads.

This makes sense since most ad clicks are made by the 1% of people. If we ignore the fact that 1% of the total internet population is still a huge crowd, it means that the remaining 99% simply have no reason to see these ads.

Let's say that if someone on the street hands you a brochure from the zoo (and you hate animals for some reason), you're more likely to throw it away without even looking at it. This kind of waste occurs in all forms of advertising, but like anything digital, it's easier on the internet.

Since we browse thousands of websites at the same time, we all know where ads come online, so it's easy not to look.

A common behavior where a user, consciously or unconsciously, does not pay attention to what they consider to be advertisements on a website. This is a well-known phenomenon that has changed the way marketing companies advertise over the decades.
